The Society

Hornby Health Care BuildingHistory
The Society began in 1978 when a committee of Hornby Islanders met and documented more than one thousand hours of volunteer nursing service provided to the community during that year. The islanders felt that the community had grown to the extent that volunteer care was not sufficient.

In 1979 the Hornby and Denman Community Health Care Society began as a non-profit society and registered charity and worked with the health authority to provide these services.

Today the Society employs 50 staff and continues offering Home Support services as well as many other programs including counseling for children, youth and families, youth outreach, community education, an equipment loan cupboard and more.

Mission
To optimize the health and health services for residents of Hornby and Denman Islands.

Resources
Our community education program provides educational workshops, information sessions, resources and referrals to island residents – all offered free of charge. These services include a resource library with books, pamphlets and videos on topics ranging from infants to the elderly (located in our office). We also facilitate health networks that bring together the various health related agencies to promote coordinated service delivery, planning and evaluation. Please see our Events Page for the information about upcoming events.
