Helping Islanders Thrive

Hornby Denman Health is a group of staff and volunteers - many of them your neighbours - working to keep our communities healthy. We serve residents of all ages with a variety of programs. From counselling for children, youth, and families to medical equipment loans, community education, and home care for seniors, we strive for compassionate, practical help where needed.

Hornby Denman Health acknowledges that all residents of Denman and Hornby Islands live and work on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded gathering places of the K’omoks First Nation and the combined and shared territory of the Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish people who have called these islands home from time immemorial. We are honoured to live in a place with such a rich and meaningful history.

Our Vision:

Our vision is Healthy Islanders and our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of Denman and Hornby Islanders by advocating for and providing community-based support and services.

Our History:

The Society began in 1978 when a group of Hornby Islanders met and documented more than one thousand hours of volunteer nursing service provided to the community. These islanders felt that the community had grown to the extent that volunteer care was insufficient.

In 1979, the Hornby and Denman Community Health Care Society began as a non-profit, registered charity and formalized these services. This local solution had an immense impact on both Islands. It built community strength and focused services where they had the most impact.

You can read more about our history in the book Voices from Hornby & Denman Island Home Support, edited by Megan J. Davies and Rachel Barken.

Our volunteer board members are a dynamic group with diverse backgrounds and experience in health, social services, and community development. They live and work here and understand these sister islands' unique approaches to community health. In addition to bringing skills from their work life or lived experiences, board members act as a touchstone for the community and keep their ears to the ground about emerging challenges. Want to make a difference to the health of your neighbours and your community? We welcome inquiries from residents interested in joining. Experience delivering health and social services and/or financial, legal or communications experience would be important assets to the board.
